Ocean Ranger — Bay Bulls, Newfoundland
This photograph was taken at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, shortly after the Ocean Ranger arrived on the island. At this stage, the rig had not yet been fully assembled — the massive latticed jacket structure you see here was still being staged near the harbour, before the platform was completed and moved to the Hibernia field.
The Ocean Ranger was the largest semi-submersible drilling rig in the world when it was built. On February 15, 1982, during a severe storm on the Grand Banks, it sank. All 84 men on board were lost. It remains the worst offshore oil disaster in Canadian history.
